I was relieved to see Cathy Genna's post on this, encouraging mother to keep
offering the breast because baby will likely continue the improvement that
has started.
When the baby has spent over 3 months using different muscles and using the
usual muscles differently in order to feed, it takes time for the muscles to
develop the strength to do the job right. Meanwhile, baby tries, but tires
before becoming satiated. If that is not recognized and dealt with by
feeding the baby in a way that doesn't frustrate or tire him, he could lose
the motivation to keep at it.
Remember, we usually say it will take about as long to resolve a BF problem
as the problem has lasted. A baby who hasn't been able to feed effectively
for months will not be able to feed perfectly all the time before he has had
time to get used to using his new-found capabilities. Focus on the progress
that is being made, week by week rather than feed by feed. Relax and adjust
expectations to fit reality. Emphasize that mother has invested so much
time and effort now that it would be a shame if unrealistic impatience
spoiled what looks to be a good outcome.

Kristiansand, Norway where I am discouraged today after landing back at
square one on a case of badly damaged and infected nipples we've been
struggling with for a MONTH now :(
