I agree completely that people are overreacting. From what she tells me there have been episodes of trace frank blood and several mucousy hem occult + stools yet her ped & GI specialist have both warned her that, "the risks of the inflammation and bleeding outweigh the benefits from breastfeeding. (In fact I was told it would be "irresponsible" to continue nursing under the circumstances.) They warn that there is some risk of severe anemia which would require transfusion -- obviously not a desirable outcome as sensitization to minor blood antigens can cause significant problems if a second transfusion is ever required. (And of course the very small risk of acquiring an infectious disease through transfusion.) I am hoping to find some information to show them that would change their minds. Given the professional relationship I have with my pediatrician, it would be very difficult for me to just ignore her advice. She is very interested in evidence-based practice and I think she would be open to changing her mind if I can present some good data."

I'm not so sure her ped is so interested in evidence-based practice if she's handing out this kind of advice...

Thanks so much for your response. I forwarded it on to my friend. I think the opinion of other MD's is very valuable in this particular circumstance!
