Dear Francoise

I have been racking my brains to try and think who could have come up with
research showing that HIV+ mothers have poorer health outcomes if they
breastfeed. I couldn't think of anyone. But that someone is trying to say
this doesn't surprise me at all!

I finally remembered a reference I came across when I was trying to find
something else. Could this be what you are looking for?

Temmerman M, Piot P. The epidemiology of HIV infection and AIDS in
developing countries: the impact on women's health. Annales Nestle
1993,51:98-105.

And yes, I do believe that this is Peter Piot who now heads UNAIDS. And
yes, it does look as if he has been friendly with Nestle.

In the Journal, the author says exactly :

"A study done in a maternity of Nairobi, on 400 mothers HVI-seropositive
demonstrate that the breastfeeding mothers are twice more at risk to die
that the other."
