Hi Jan,
Thanks for taking the time to respond and for your insight!
The babies/moms that I was referring to would not fit into the; "not getting
enough", "foremilk/hindmilk imbalance or lactose overload" or overestimating
the "real" number of feedings categories and that is what I meant to
suggest(badly I guess :) ) by stating "after exploring all other possible
causes". These babies are very definitely overfeeding. A recent example comes
to mind. The father of a two week old (I had seen them for a VNA visit at
4days of age) called describing a baby screaming virtually all of the time if
not nursing q1/2-1hr. They were frantic and considering discontinuing brfdg.
which was especially surprising to me since theirs was one of the most
rewarding visits I had done in a while; a lovely couple in love with their
baby, all extremely adept at nursing and otherwise.
I am intrigued by the suggesstion to try one breast for several feeds
although the increased stim had probably resulted in such an oversupply with
this Mom that I'm not sure she could have tolerated it and I wonder if the
desired result might be somewhat more delayed than simply trying to hold the
baby off a little longer....I don't know but one idea I will surely try in
the future!
Thanks again!
