not to compete with your "5 Ss", are the
"6 Ss" I teach expectant and new parents as relates to *early* feeding cues;

"squirming, stretching, squeaking, ....sucking, smacking, searching"

People tend to remember things best in threes, so I pause between the two
sets of three cues.

And, yes, I agree, these can be demonstrated in a swaddled position, at least
most of them by most babies.

As for calming, my routine has been to teach the "jiggle, pat, sway" method,
using all three components simultaneously, ...I'll say and demo for example
"to calm the baby do the "jiggle, pat, sway", and yes, you usually need all
three components for it to work well", and speak to the baby calmly and
sweetly, no matter what you say, say it calmly and sweetly,

This demo for the new parents works almost 100% of the time, can't think of
when it did not work to calm a newborn, and also gives baby an *opportunity*
to burp, ......return demo teaches this skill and increases parent
confidence,
....in prenatal classes we practice with dolls.

Haven't read everything on Lactnet lately, but, enjoying your input and *all*
the discussion.
