The wife did in fact have children of her own before her hysterectomy and I
do believe she breastfed but am not 100% sure of that. I believe they are
grown and living on their own now, very excited about the babies and 100%
supportive of their mom's marriage.

This topic is near and dear to my heart as a member of the LGBT community.
I have worked with many lesbian couples where the non-bio mom induced
lactation in order to BF the baby because bio mom couldn't lactate or they
were having twins and felt it was important to have plenty of milk and not
take any risks... :) I get calls and emails from lesbian women around the
US looking for help from someone who will not judge them as many have run
into this very sad issue. I currently have the pleasure of having several
lesbian couples and a couple of single lesbian moms in my care.

I am also currently working with a gay soon to be dad who has a surrogate
carrying his genetic child and who discussed very openly with me the option
of inducing lactation in himself any way possible in order to provide human
milk for his child. He is VERY committed to this and as a human and Nurse
Practioner (his words) his child deserves her birthright of human milk. His
little one is due any day now and, because he found mommies to donate milk
for him she has PLENTY of milk to last her quite a while and one donor who
will be pumping for her indefinitely. By the way: Just call me Auntie
Jaye! :)

On a side note I remember years ago, 13 to be exact, working on the phone as
a peer counselor with a lesbian mom who had one breast - and twins! I
counseled her through pumping and trying to sustain a milk supply. I
remember wishing I knew more to be able to help her. I never did meet her
in person until about 4 wks ago when I set up a homeschooling park day for
older homeschooled kids. This gal shows up and we start talking about what
I do and she told me her story...damn small world sometimes. :) It was
great to put a face to the voice on the phone - I never forgot her. We had
a great reunion!

Warmly,
Jaye
