I need references for a mom with whom I did a consult when the baby was 5
days old. Mom has inverted nipples and hadn't ever gotten the baby onto the
breast. The baby had been supplemented since birth and refused to latch onto
the breast. But, with a shield, baby latched with audible swallows and
volume of intake was 46 cc's. Not bad for a 5 day old! Anyways, I'd tried
to follow-up with the mom several times, but didn't get beyond her phone
message. Today, I got the mom on the phone and baby is 1 month old. Mom told
me she saw another LC who told her the shield would interfere with the baby's
intake and decrease her milk supply, so to stop using it. She went on to say
the baby hasn't been able to take the breast since then. She is strictly
pumping and feeding expressed breastmilk. Can anyone provide me with the
source that describes nipple shields interfering with baby's intake of milk
and with milk volume? I'm not familiar with these studies....
