I have a client whose baby is two weeks old. Mom has not been able to
urinate since the birth of the baby. Mom has been catheterizing herself at
home. Mom had vaginal birth with an epidural and the doctors believe she
has nerve damage. No problems breastfeeding but the doctor wants her to
wean temporarily for the drug Bethanechol Choride (Urabeth, Urecholine).
She is afraid her baby will not take her breast if she weans.
>My source says that this drug is poorly absorbed in the GI tract however it
does caution breastfeeding while taking it. Does anyone have experience
with this drug? Is there an alternative?
Thanks,
Marguerite Kelly, IBCLC
