Hello All,
Just wanted to share with you my last prenatal visit. I was having the
diabetes screening done and as my blood was being drawn, I noticed some
boxes with familiar markings...I asked the young woman about it, and she
explained that I would get one of the gifts after I was done. She could
tell I was not really excited in a good way and said that I didn't have to
take one, which I quickly responded with, "No, I am a certified
breastfeeding educator and I think it is important for me to see what
patients are receiving."
She told me that I could take the formula out, since that can encourage
moms to not breastfeed (good information, I thought). Then she went on to
share that she had not breastfed for long, only a matter of weeks, due to
returning to work and not having enough milk. I was very sad for her. It
is amazing how quickly women share their grief.
The "gift" contains an expandable black bag, 3 individual packets of
formula for making 4 oz. bottles, and a lot of marketing-I mean-
"educational materials". How ironic that they are encouraging formula
while having a diabetes screening? Maybe dentists could start giving
people candy with pamphlets explaining that "brushing twice a day is best,
but some people find it hard to balance work, family, and sleep with good
oral hygiene."
