Jan I haven't yet had a mammogram, but when I was 39 my OB mentioned that
he might want to get a baseline. We discussed my hx, two children before
26, both bf for longer than a year, no family hx of breast cancer, my years
as a vegetarian, an average of only 8 to 10 menstrual periods a year, my
rock bottom low cholersterol count ect. He then exclaimed, "Your risk is
about 1 in 1,000! Especially with all that breastfeeding as a young woman.
I guess we can wait until 40 for a baseline. I'm not really that worried
about you." I will proabably still be breastfeeding my last baby (conceived
a few months after this encounter with my OB) when I turn 40 next year so I
guess we will wait a little longer.

My OB is an attending professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Loyola
University. I don't know if his 1 in 1,000 stat was hyperbole, but he
definately was aware of the protective influence of breastfeeding for an
extended period of time on the risk of cancer in the breast.

I hope your "shadow" was of no consequence. Thinking of you...
