Linda,
Both of my children got their teeth in around 4.5 months and both started
biting me at around 5 months. Both also went on nursing strikes, and I
didn't even "bop them." I just yelled "Ow!" and removed the breast from
their mouths. They were very upset and wouldn't nurse for a while. I have
become the "Biting Expert" in our office, having researched the subject and
not found much help with my own two. One thing I found helpful with the
nursing strike was to nurse in a different position and a different room than
we were in when the biting occurred. I also found it very important to relax
myself first and think positive thoughts, because I'm sure the babes could
sense my tension about it.
I've written two papers on biting, one for mothers and one for health
professionals, and I would be glad to send them to anyone interested.
