Hi Ros,
Yes I agree you perseption of lack of data on this topic apart from the
data collected in 1989 and the NCMHR working parties.
I woud agree a survey of health professionals would astound you, their
lack of knowledge on breastfeeding, and bucking people like myself who
have decided to become a Lactation consultant as 'fanatical'.
At present the only saving grace is that hospitals wish to become 'baby
friendly' and have to have the 'ten steps to successful breastfeeding'
into place. Before anything else can be done even though a written
policy may be in place, this does not change attitudes of the people
dealing with the new mothers. Change does not take place over night, and
sometimes change does not take place. It is a frame of mind that is
resiliant to any change.
I can say in the hospital I work in, the attitude has changed by the
smallest fraction to breastfeeding. This is due to their lack of
education in breastfeeding and their unwillingness to participate in the
education program already written for them.
With my research project, I found many of the teenage mothers when they
gave up breastfeeding thought it would be easier to formula feed, but
they found it was not not what they expected.
Yes this would be a good research project, Our area has 168
nationalities, and more languages and dialects than that. We see that
the Asin mother more likerly to formula feed it is a prestigious reason,
shows the family 'wealth'.
Do not know of any study that shows this study as yet ?
Could be a PHD study ?
