Chris Mulford used to say "100 minutes/day" so I just repeated it because
Chris said so :-)

Diane Spatz @ Children's Hospital of Philadelphia says to provide mothers
with a target milk production, after her milk comes in.

Days 0-4 CHOP saves every drop of colostrum. Used to moisten mouths of
babies who are unable to be fed-all colostrum is collected in bitty bottles
and carefully cataloged by # so baby eventually gets it in order it was
produced

Once mom is producing 320 mls/day the target becomes 440-1220 mls/24 hrs.
They tell mom about prolactin being diurnal (peaks 10 pm to 4am) and how to
pump at night to take advantage of this fact, plus get enough sleep!

Moms with smaller storage capacity may have to pump more often than moms
with larger storage capacity. Talk about long intervals between pumping
decreases production. Teach breast massage prior to pumping to increase
mls.

They keep careful records of: frequency of pumping, # of pumping sessions/24
hours, R vs L breast production, total production, etc. They aim high for
production. Want mom to be producing 2 x baby's needs by discharge. (gives
back-up for transition to BreastFEEDING vs pumping.)

Diane states if the mom is pumping less than 500 mls/24 hours at 1 week she
is at risk for lactation failure.
She went on to describe reasons for being at risk, use of domperidone etc.

Told you it was a GREAT conference. You need to bring it to a city near you
or come to Philadelphia next March. I have extra beds at my house :-) I am
not her promoter, just loved the conference, LOL! Pat in SNJ
