It looked like just a regular night for Prenatal Breastfeeding
Class. Then all of a sudden in walks one of our Peds who is 35
weeks pregnant and her husband! I felt a brief tinge of panic, the
I realized the gargatuan opportunity that the good Lord had laid
before me. I could teach this Pediatrician about proper managemnt
of breastfeeding by erasing what she had learned and inputting
up-to-date information. Well, the class went very well. She and
her husband were full of questions!! She was very curious about
nipple confusion and the risks of ABM. After class, she even asked
what I recommend about Vitamin/Iron/Fluoride supplements. I
explained lactoferrin to her and stressed that unless she did not
eat nutritiously and had little sun exposure, these things were
unnecessary in healthy babies. She was very interested. She
nodded her head in agreement when I mentioned who parents should
contact after going home from the hospital if they had a
breastfeeding problem. I said that if the baby seems to be sick or
unhealthly they need to see a Pediatrician. If the baby is healthy
or has been seen by a Ped, and they need help with BREASTFEEDING,
they need to see me. I clearly say that I cannot treat medical
problems, and that my specialty is breastfeeding. She was in
agreement with this. I was exhilerated after class.

Well there is at least one more breastfeeding-smart Pediatrician in
the world!!!
