Kathy, your question about why so many babies apparently outgrow
allergies caught my attention because my daughter and I were just
discussing this. Do they really *outgrow* these allergies, or do they
just manifest themselves in different ways over time? When my daughter
was an infant I had to avoid dairy or she would be miserably colicky. I
would occasionally indulge, or later let her have a bit of dairy, but
she would be miserable the next day until after her 2nd birthday when
she *seemed* to be okay with limited amounts of dairy. (By the way, she
nursed well past her 4th birthday!) When she was elementary and middle
school aged she would occasionally binge on dairy, and then complain of
stomach aches; she ignored my suggestions that it was the dairy (which
she only got in school!) until she was in middle school, then she began
to avoid this most of the time on her own. Now she is grown and nursing
her third child (!) and has recognized that there are now other foods
that set off her stomach aches (still her main symptom) including egg
and a few others. Her husband is highly allergic to a number of foods
and other environmental allergens, and there two year old daughter is
now having problems with eczema and hives (she is about to put her on an
elimination diet.) We are not convinced thatmy daughter ever really
outgrew those original allergies; I only wish I had known more when she
was small (and I thought I knew a lot then, when I was an LLLL!)
I'm only glad my daughter is building on those experiences now.
Flossie
