a couple of things:

World Breastfeeding Week awareness:
Our WIC program collected handknitted baby hats in the shape of
various fruits and vegetables (apple hats, strawberry hats, blueberry
hats etc you get the idea)to coincide with WIC's nutrition message
and to gift to the mothers on the program that are breastfeeding.
Since I had posted the request on a very popular knitting blog the
response has been overwhelming and to date I have received 125 baby
hats from all over the world, the furthest being UK and HI. This has
been a really fun promotion for everyone: the knitters, the WIC staff
and the moms and babies receiving the hats. I plan to take some
really cool pictures.

Boston Billow Nursing Pillow
An LC friend of mine who is not currently on Lactnet asked if I could
post this for her. She (and I) have no financial link to the
company, just posting it as a courtesy to the company since we posted
here about the initial controversy.

  Thank you, lactation consultants !

GOOD NEWS!

You may know that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in
January 2004, issued a ban on the Boston Billow nursing pillow, based
on a complaint from a competitor. *The ban DID NOT include the Boston
Billow nursing pillow with the vipeable cover for use in hospitals
(NICUs).

The ban caused an uproar among lactation consultants and numerous
IBCLCs wrote letters to the CPSC in support of the Boston Pillow
nursing pillow.
In July 2005, we submitted an amendment to the CPSC requesting that
an exemption be made to the C.F.R. regulations the CPSC referred to
so that “an exemption be made when the product is specifically
designed, intended and promoted for mothers to use when breastfeeding
and when requested by a pediatrician or a board certified lactation
consultant.”
In other words, that the Boston Billow nursing pillow could AGAIN be
available for mothers that needed it, when requested by a
pediatrician or an IBCLC.

The amendment was published in the Federal Register, soliciting
comments. According to a CPSC report, one comment was from Safe Kids
Worldwide. They have never seen a Boston Billow nursingpillow. The
other negative comment came from Susan Brown, CEO of the Boppy
Company !!!
In the end, the CPSC Commissioners, unanimously, voted in our favor
to grant our petition.

The next step in this process is that the CPSC will publish an
“advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) in the Federal
Register, again inviting comments from the public. This means that
we again will need the great grass-root support we received from you,
the lactation consultants around the country.

We will keep you informed.

Hope all your WBW plans go well.
