Wooldridge, M. et.al. Effect of a traditional and a new nipple shield on 
sucking patterns and milk flow.  Early Human, Dec. 1980; 4:357-362.
 
Red rubber nipple shield reduced milk flow by 58%.  Thin latex shield reduced 
milk flow by 22%.  Study observed only one feeding, so very limited study.  
This info came from the BF Answer Book - revised edition - p. 566.  There 
might be more in the new edition of the BF Answer Book...apparently they have 
a large section on nipple shields.>>
