Dear Lactnetters, I just could not keep quiet anymore about seeing patients in house. As an LC in the third hospital where I have worked during my 40+ years in OB, I have always seen all Moms who are BF, in order of priority. It would tie my hands to have to get a request from the doctor or nurse, even though they often do . When I come on duty the nurses will say so and so needs your help first or Dr. SO and So wants you to see Mrs. So and So. The hospital has hired me as a consultant to see any and all breastfeeding moms. Yes there is an prn order to cover any insurance issues if ther is a problem. By seeing all breastfeeding Moms when possible I catch a lot of potential problems by looking a latch or positioning, etc. Any Doctor who is uncomfortable having you stop in an just let a patient know you are available even after discharge has a problem not you. Lets be more assertive in our role as LC'S. We are medical people and there is a great need for our support. I have never had a complaint from a Doctor, Patient or Hospital employee for seeing a Breastfeeding Mother.
