Several questions come to mind:
1-Is everyone sure the original weight was accurate? I've seen some
weight differences between day 1 and 2 that can only be attributed
to one of the weights not being accurate!
2-Did the baby void and stool before or after the initial weight was
taken? If the baby had no output before the orignial weight and
then a large one (or several large ones) after, this can show as a
greater weight loss that if baby pees and/or poops before that first
weight.
3-Was mom on IVs? While still somewhat controversial, it may be
that baby has extra fluid on board when mom has had IVs, especially
with certain durgs in them. This extra fluid can give an
artificially high initial weight and subsequent "greater" weight
loss.
4-Have stools changed from meconium to transitional or mature breast
stools? Some babies seem to "dump" all that meconium very quickly
while others take a few days. Do we know fi the volume of meconium
is proportional to baby's weight and in other words, pretty much of
a constant?

As has been discussed so many times previously, weight should be
only ONE aspect of baby's condition that is considered in deciding
whether or not baby needs something in addition to what he/she gets
from nursing.
