Almost every mother I have dealt with who had an arching baby felt the baby
was "angry" or "rejecting her as a mother" or rejecting the breast. I always
ask mom if she feels baby is rejecting her and explain that baby has no
control over his behavior and isn't doing this on purpose.

I have had some success with arching babies with the following information
that was in the BAB. I swaddle them with their legs folded up to their
tummy, gently and comfortably, and their backs rounded. Try to keep the back
rounded, like maybe the football hold with a rounded back. Or the cradle
with baby's body wrapped around moms chest and under arm pit if possible.
The more I work in this business and see these babies, and the more I see
positive results from craniosacral therapy, I am a true believer in it.
Therefore, I would also suggest CST for this baby.

Many moms do not pump during the night time. What I see is these moms do not
make a full supply or start dropping quickly. I tell moms that pumping
between 1-5 AM is highly encouraged because "research shows their milk
making hormones are highest then." I suggest pumping at 10 PM and then at
least once in the middle of the night, and again at 6-7 AM.

I also give moms the information out of the BAB on an infant's caloric needs
(ounces per day needed). I will flat out tell a mom to feed more, and how
much I think is needed, because the weight is so low or she isn't feeding
enough. Plus if I can, I will send a report to her HCP to cover all bases.

All you can do is give the mom information and she will do what she wants
with it. She may be overwhelmed and feeling rejected and angry about these
problems.
