I'm very curious whose bright idea it was to put this pill in a vagina to

I went to a very interesting lecture on misoprostol and it's history some
months ago. From what I recall (no notes unfortunately) someone was
prescribed it for gastric ulcer disease and it caused miscarriage. When this
link became obvious, a black market developed for misoprotol, I THINK in
South AMerica somewhere, as a cheap abortion pill. People would obtain the
misoprostol allegedly for gastric ulcers and then sell it off. I think the
research into misoprostol and it's therapeautic use sprang from that.
Interestingly, only yesterday I was collecting data for a trial on whether
this medication is most useful vaginally or orally for midtrimester
induction (for fetal anomalies).
I also spoke to the ob/gyn involved in the trial who is fairly up to date on
this medication and she wasn't aware of any link between it's use for
postpartum haemorrhage and subsequent inhibition of lactation. She did
mention however that the WHO were trialling it for management of PPH so
there may be data available soon. All the trials I have been involved in up
till now are for induction of labour in 2nd trimester for fetal anomaly or
fetal demise
