An audiologist just sposke to our public health nursing staff about this
very topic. I will summarize it the best I can and if there is more
interest will ask her to write a short, definitive explaination: vowel
sounds are heard at a different megahertz range than consonants. What
range the child is not hearing in affects what kind of speech difficulty
will manifest. Also, the type of hearing loss can affect which part of
speech is not heard. She said she can usually tell what range the loss
will be in based on the speech. She stressed that anytime there is a
concern with speech it should be evaluated along with the hearing and never
assume it is a speech pattern the child will outgrow.
