Deborah asks, "To all you wise and more experienced LC’s, please help me
(and others) as a future IBCLC and growing lactation practitioner to learn
how to be a professional collaborator and patient advocate and to eliminate
divisiveness from my practice. I will be forever grateful:) "

I humbly count myself among the wise (this is up for debate) and more
experienced LCs. Deborah, your post is an example of what I would like to
keep seeing on lactnet. It is thought out, respectful, and
thought-provoking. I hope you will keep contributing. It seems you are
already a very good prof. collaborator, pt advocate, and a respectful and
open-minded person (a great way to eliminate diviseness).

I also have great respect for Jennifer. I've said before, I have been
"raised" in the medical field. I attended nsg school and grad school at a
large medical center (LSU in New Orleans) in a city with a large medical
presence (2 big medical schools, university based, and other internationally
known institutions e.g. Ochsner where I worked many years). It is hard not
to value and believe in some of this science and research. At the same time,
I am not blind nor naive to some of the harm that is done everyday to
clients in the name of medicine (not bashing doctors here, just the medical
model). I am extremely concerned about obstetrical care and newborn /nicu
care although I've seen lives saved many times. I admit I really don't get
how homeopathy can possibly work and I really don't personally believe in
it, but I would be very open to trying it or having others do so. I do
believe in herbalism (after all I am a plant person and grow food and live
in a region full of home remedies and such) but feel it is not far afield of
medicine, IMO (plants and meds like digitalis, tamoxifen and more). Bottom
line to me is open-mindedness and respect, but I also have an element of
"prove it" in me too.

Best regards to you and all lactnetters,
Laurie
