Barbara told us about advice given recently to a new mom:

"Baby's get all they need to eat in the first seven minutes, so
> after that nursing is just for comfort-a pacifier or thumb is fine to
> substitute," "at 12 pounds a baby doesn't need to eat at night and
should sleep 12
> hr,"

What is magic about the "first seven (to 10) minutes" for feeding that some
HCPs have firmly set into their memories? And what's wrong with comfort
nursing at whatever time in the feeding it may occur? I think this is
partly where the thoughts are planted that mom is nursing for her own
"unnatural desires".

And what is it about baby's feeding needs changing at 12-13 pounds? This
HCP said he doesn't have to feed at night. A major baby food mfg says
that's the time to begin feeding foods - specifically their foods.

Does anyone know where these "milestones" come from?

"if you have to co-sleep, use bolsters around the baby and you to keep you
> from rolling over on him; the only SIDS death in my practice was from
> co-sleeping."

If bolsters are "safe" how come crib bumper pads are "dangerous"? How are
bolsters safer than sleeping with baby on a soft sofa?

And SIDS was caused by co-sleeping? I always thought that if you know the
cause, it isn't SIDS. SIDS, by definition, is death by an unknown cause. It
could still have been SIDS that occurred in the parents' bed, but NOT
caused by co-sleeping.

I believe some people don't even THINK about what they are saying.
