The first question - is it possible - I can attest to having ONE mom whose
child finally weaned from the nipple shield at 9 months. Her case was
unusual in many ways, when she started breastfeeding, one nipple was
inverted, the other had a piercing. She found the uncontrolled leaking on
the pierced nipple uncomfortable, and when she found the baby nursed well at
the other breast with a nipple shield, she stopped nursing on the pierced
side and continued to nurse on the other. When her baby was 8 months old,
she found she was pregnant, and thought if she removed the nipple shield,
she'd wean her - nope - she insisted on nursing...and mom tandem nursed (she
did nurse the next baby on the pierced nipple) for 7 more months before the
older one weaned - she never used the shield for the baby. The older baby
would nurse and get the breast soft and pliable enough so the baby could
nurse.

The next question is SHOULD she wean - and that depends on the reason for
the shield - if the shield prevents pain or makes nursing possible, then it
may be necessary to continue to use it. I know there are some old posts
about toddlers and their dependence on nipple shields - including cautionary
tales of toddlers using them as pacifiers - chocking danger!
