I just met with a mom who is planning a mastectomy once her newborn baby is
six months old.

I also worked with her when her first child was born, and I know she's in a
really tough spot, trying to make the best decisions for her baby and for
herself. Continuing to nurse while being carefully monitored doesn't seem
to be an option for her.

She has received varying opinions about how long she must wait between
weaning and the surgery and I haven't been able to find anything definitive.
It seems to me it shouldn't make much difference, as both breasts are being
removed and the surgeon should be able to deal with any milk flow, rather
than putting mom and baby through an unnecessarily early weaning.

Can anyone point me to some information I could share with this mother?
