Hi!
I have seen research that seems to indicate that if the mother's Vitamin D levels are adequate, then it is not necessary to supplement the breastfeeding baby. The research that indicated the need for infants to be supplemented, was most likely done on infants whose breastfeeding mother's were deficient in Vitamin D. Pregnant women's levels should also be checked and supplemented as needed, because if their levels are low, they have a higher incidence of eclampsia, and pre-term labor.

Here is a link to an article regarding this called" Vitamin D Supplementation during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding is Found to be Vital"

Here is another good article about Vit D in general from the Harvard School of Public Health

I'd be interested to hear your opinion about supplementing the mother instead of the baby--thus avoiding introducing anything other than mother's milk to infants.

Thanks!
