This is currently a hot-topic in the UK too, and policies are very variable.
In some hospitals mothers are encouraged to sleep with their newborns, in
others it is 'on mother's request', and in yet others it is banned. I'm
often asked to comment on drafts of policies from around the UK and they too
are variable in terms of amount of detail and types of contraindications --
but I particularly like the UK BFI sample policy that can be found at
http://www.babyfriendly.org.uk/bedshare.htm

Following a pilot study last year, a paediatrician colleague and I have just
received funding to do a big video study of 90 co-sleeping mums and babies
in hospital (here called 'bedding-in' like 'rooming-in'), and so I would
also be interested in hearing about US (and world-wide) hospital policies
and issues regarding bedding-in, and how important you find it to be in
initiating / establishing breastfeeding. Do many hospitals in US and
elsewhere have guidelines, for instance, regarding administration of opiate
analgesics in labour and clearance time before mum and baby bed-share?

On a personal note, almost 10 years ago, I delivered my eldest daughter in a
small town hospital in eastern Maine with a fabulous midwife (no pain relief
or any other intervention) who encouraged me to sleep with her from the day
she was born. It took several years, and much reading about US obstetric
practices, before I realised how unusual this had been.
