Pat and Mardrey,
Thanks for the references on lactose. In counseling nursing mothers at
WIC, I often hear them repeat misinformation that someone (even their
physician, but often their relatives) has given them, particularly about
"lactose intolerance". Even though I know the better info in my mind, I
have been wanting references in print to have on hand with such solid
information in case anyone at my WIC site ever faults me for telling moms
that soy formula does not contain lactose, and how important lactose is
for babies' brains. There is a very common perception that you just feed
soy formula if your baby "appears" to be allergic to the first cow's milk
formula tried (e.g., the baby spits it up a lot, has gas, etc. etc. etc.)

Of course, we first try to get them understanding the basics and
comfortable and pleased with the idea of exclusive breastfeeding, but -
sigh- we often have to tell ourselves that half a loaf is better than
none, and authorize issue one of the formulas covered by our specific WIC
contract if they strongly request it.
