Thank you toeveryone who has posted about Nipples Shields, it is fascinating when you share your personal, professional opinions on their use and when you would use, how you would monitor om/baby and so forth.

Thany you to those who emailed me privately as well- so much great info, I thank you.

I have learned a lot and will definetly see the NP as a useful tool in an older baby but I stand by my opinion that they shouldbe avoided as much as possible in the first 3 days PP- simply because of the colostrum/low amount and mom's confidence. There are simply so many other techniques that can be used to keep baby fed and yet let them have practice time at the breast too.

LLL Breastfeeding Answer book had some great info on NP use and what to monitor during there use- they were indicated as a last resort type of thing , but not a "bad thing"

Dr Jack has another opinion on them- which I found interesting!

Here Dr Jack is talking about a 3 day old "nonlatcher"

"Although many lactation experts might recommend a nipple shield at this point (see photo), I feel strongly that this is not the right way to go. Nipple shields can be tried later, if other approaches have not worked, but not now. Using a nipple shield in the first week after the baby was born is, I believe, a way of saying, “I don’t know what else to do”. It is not giving time a chance to work.

so all you guys giving out shields on day 2 have simply run out of ideas!
   LOL- just joking!!

Well- I think he means well!
