Hi Carol: Gentian Violet, a 0.5% aqueous solution applied twice a day to
the nipples and in the baby's mouth seems to be effective, it appears less
likely to cause side effects than higher concentrations or more frequent
applications. (Amir L, et al., Lactation Consultant Series. LLL 1995)

Use cotton swab to paint (0.5% solution) the inside of the baby's mouth
then put the baby to both breasts (to treat the mothers nipples). Should be
used for once a day for only 3-7 days. More concentrated solutions (1%)
have been used clinically but these increase the risk of irritation and
ulceration of the mucous membranes. (Heinig J, et al, J Hum Lact 15(4) 1999)

You are right in saying that Hydrogen Peroxide should not be used.

Just a quick comment to Beverly: I have 3 allergy children, plus myself. I
would listen to what the mother says, strawberries are a very common
allegen.
Warmest wishes, Kerri Frischknecht. RN, RM, IBCLC, in thundery, rainy
Switzerland.
