I received a phone call today from the local radio station, asking me to
comment on the lawsuit filed in the Dayton, OH area against Wal-mart for
allegedly discriminating against two women breastfeeding their toddlers on
Wal-mart property. Radio announcer stated the news item had come across the
AP wire. I searched AP site on the web and could not find it, although the
case sounds familiar from a year or two ago. (?) They wanted me to comment
on breastfeeding in public, i.e. being *discreet*, and should a mother be
allowed to breastfeed anywhere, even if it makes others uncomfortable. I
jumped right up on my soapbox! I brought up the fact that I am *offended*
by some of the beach wear (or lack of it) I and my pre-teen children are
exposed to at the pool (and rightly so, I think!), yet people get all hung
up on nursing moms with little or no skin exposed...and so what if it IS
exposed? The radio also asked if I thought this lawsuit would hurt the
public's perception of breastfeeding? No, but it will raise awareness of
the baby and mother's rights! I enjoyed my interview immensely, and it will
air on the eve. news. However, I would like to know more about the case in
question...can anyone fill me in?
