Is anyone going to the ICEA convention next week? If you are, please
introduce yourself to me when you're there. And please nod and smile if
you're sitting in the front row!

I'm giving the keynote address for ICEA on Saturday morning--a
rabble-rousing, finger-pointing talk about how the US has muffed the
maternal/child Healthy People 2000 Goals for the Nation, and will continue
to fall short of the 2010 goals if we don't stop medicalizing birth,
shirking responsibility, and dawdling instead of doing. The evidence for
"typical" hospital birth practices is slim, and the outcomes are scarey!
While I presume that the majority of the audience will be US-based, my
suggestions for improved birth outcomes will be applicable for health care
providers elsewhere.

Only one of my slides is on breastfeeding, but I'm pretty fired up about
this. The US has met exactly ONE of its 17 goals for maternal child health
in the past decade....
