Astrid Lindgren died yesterday, January 28, 2002, at 94.
Aside from her monumental production of great books for children, she was an
activist for the rights of both animals and children, and for peace among
nations.
The Swedish breastfeeding mothers' group Amningshjalpen gave her a special
award some years ago for her portrayal of breastfeeding in Ronia, the
Robber's Daughter. In accepting it she said that one of the greatest
regrets of her life was that she had not breastfed her first child. He was
born when she was 19 and not married, and she had to leave him in the care
of others to make a living for the two of them.
If you are among those who were inspired by the bold and fearless Pippi
Longstocking, who lies compulsively but never abuses her superhuman strength
for evil purposes, you might want to sign the book of condolences on the
internet. You will find it at www.alv.se, but the site is in Swedish so you
have to click on 'skriv inn din halsning har'. I am guessing you can figure
out the rest.
