Regarding HIV, pregnancy, bf and infancy, how can we as HCPs can guide
our patients
and clients to reliable info so that they can make informed choices?
There is so much information out there in magazines, newspapers,
the Web, some of it is good and some isn't. Lots of it has the support
of people with knowledgable backgrounds (like researchers in immunology,
biology, medicine, etc)
When I teach about childbirth and other issues, I spend a lot of
time helping people frame their concerns in their minds. What is the
issue?
What are your concerns about the issue? What do you need to know to make
the best choice you can? That helps us to frame questions for people to
ask
their HCP about whatever the issue is: bf, bf and work, C/Section, labor
induction, pain meds in labor, whatever. I also encourage people to take
their
time (assuming this is not an emergency) and ask whatever they need to in
order
to own the choice that they are making and to feel that it is their
choice and
not being imposed upon them.
HIV is a very emotional and scary topic, especially when you are
directly effected.
What are the questions HIV+ moms and dads should be asking in order to
make
good choices for themselves and their children? How can they distinguish
the
quality of information they get for answers?
thanks again for any guidance, insights any of you have on this issue.
