I looked this up for a staff inservice & drew the markings on a volufeed for illustration. My primary sources were Lawrence, R&A, BFing Atlas, Answer Book, Linda Smith. It relates to anatomic size of baby's stomach. There was a recent post on how to bottle feed by cues, not by filling until baby refunds it all. That's important to teach. Too many RNs I've seen interpret "chin support" to mean "press firmly and rhythmically" on baby's chin to make sure he consumes "enough", whatever that is. But I digress...
Day 1: 4-8 cc per feed
Day 2: 15-20 cc per feed
Day 3: 30 cc per feed
Day 4: 60 cc per feed
After that the numbers range from 2.5 to 2.7 to 3.0 oz per lb of body weight, split among 24 hours' worth of feeds.
Ex: 10 lb baby should take in 25 to 30 oz over 24 hours, divided by # of feeds. I think the 2.5 was to maintain weight and the higher numbers were to grow.

Subject: Artificial feeding

Does anyone have a protocol for amounts of artificial milk that should be
fed an infant in the first 3 days ( I know, none, but if they have to get
some?). Our docs decided to let artificially fed babies, or those who get a
bottle in the first few days, feed as breastfed babies do, ad libitum.
Because those little bottles that we have in the hospital flow so quickly,
some babies are getting up to 100 cc a feed. Needless to say, they spit most
of it up!! There have to be some guidelines other than the 150cc per kilo
per day, which is really too much on day one. and day 2. IN the old days,
they use to say 10cc on day 1, 20 cc on day 2, 30 cc on day 3, until you get
to 150cc/k/d. That was also probably too much.
