I struggle with this nearly every day....babies born from 34-37 weeks that
are "nursing" and going home with mom. Because I'm not here every day, sometimes
they begin supplementing with formula because it never occured to anyone to
start pumping to have colostrum/breast milk as a supplement? Does anyone have a
plan or handout to share with moms? Staff kind of gets it when
developmentally appropriate care is explained in terms of breastfeeding (i.e. decreased
energy = decreased breast stim = decreased intake = you know the rest.)
I have attended several excellent presentations on this topic by well
respected LCs (Barbara Wilson-Clay, Mary Rose Tully, and one or two others) but I
can't find a handout for mom.

I wrote an article on this (Pediatric Annals May 2003) and someone sent me a
care path to review which was quite good. Can't find it at the moment. Dr.
Yvonne Vaucher and Dr. Eyla Boies at UCSD also have presented this topic
several times at the Academy of Breastfeeding Medcine basic breastfeeding course for
physicians. There may still be a few of last year's syllabuses around (course
title: What Every Physician Needs to Know About Breastfeeding or WEPNTKAB -
call or email ABM - www.bfmed.org). If you can't get a copy, I would be happy
to copy and snail mail it to you.
