I have read a provocative booklet (which I first heard about on Lactnet over
a year ago) entitled, "The Controversial Issue of Breastfeeding
Cleft-Affected Infants." I have never worked directly with a cleft-affected
baby, but have worked with a mom whose first baby was cleft-affected. She
believed the Medela booklet was too optimistic. This booklet I am referring
to is not so much pessimistic as it is insistent that one of the best things
you can do for these babies is to protect the milk supply with frequent,
effective pumping and also find a surgeon who will do early repair of the
cleft. The authors suggest that surgery three to four months after birth
would be ideal.

This book can be ordered from [log in to unmask] or go to
www.telusplanet.net/public/jgmiller. I have no financial interest in this
book.
