Greetings to all:

I am a Muslim woman, (American born), LLL Leader and LC. I have nursed four
children, sill nursing my 26 mo old daughter. I have fasted during the Holy
Month of
Ramadan while breastfeeding.

When my children were under one year old, I found it very difficult to maintain
my fast. I had no noticeable decline in milk supply, but found myself sometimes
light headed and dizzy. As a result, when they were very young, I did not fast.
Women who are pregnant or nursing are not obligated to fast.

Once the children were older, I fasted with very little difficulty. Most
fasting/breastfeeding women that I know make a conscious effort to adequately
rehydrate themselves, once they've broken their fast. In addition, before the
next day's fast, all Muslims, men and women are strongly encouraged to eat a
pre-sunrise meal. This meal is very helpful in maintaining energy and keeping
the body hydrated throughout the fasting day.
