Our newspaper ran a photo story about a giraffe born at the local zoo.
The staff were there and had arranged in advance a stock of camel's
milk, as the mother wouldn't be feeding for a couple of days. (?)The
photo showed an employee, you guessed it, feeding the giraffe with a
baby's bottle. I wrote the following letter to the editor but it wasn't
published.here it is just so I can say I didn't waste my breath.

"The baby giraffe at Dubai Zoo (Second giraffe calf born, June 4th 2002)
should be thankful for the human intervention to save her life. After
all, what on earth would have happened if this giraffe had been born in
the wild, without access to camel's milk and a human to feed it by
bottle and teat?

Now that the giraffe's gut has been compromised by the milk of another
specie and it's suckling pattern adopted to that of a rubber teat
instead of the mother's, we can be proud that this giraffe is enjoying
the same standard of quality care we afford our very own human newborn
babies."
