The continuing discussion on pacifiers and SIDS due to the article in the
British Medical Journal at
_http://bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/bmj.38671.640475.55v1?ecoll_ (http://bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/bmj.38671.640475.55v1?ecoll)
, shows yet again that researchers are still not studying a crucial element
in the relationship between pacifier use and breathing. There is no
differentiation between babies who were habitual pacifier users and those who never
used pacifiers. As Dr. Peter Fleming has said, it is among habitual pacifier
users where there is an increased risk of SIDS when those babies did not use a
pacifier for their last sleep. That is quite different from making a
statement that all babies should use pacifiers to prevent SIDS.
