On Wed, 16 Jun 2010, Naomi Bar-Yam responded to a post on one of the less
usual aspects of milk siblingship in Saudi Arabia.

Hi, Naomi,

Yes, I can confirm that it was in Kuwait that the neonatologists arranged
milk donations for premature babies, within the religious requirements of
Islam. For those who are interested, the citation is:

Al-Naqeeb NA, et al. The introduction of breast milk donation in a Muslim
country. Journal of Human Lactation 2000; 16: 346-350.

Most of what Naomi wrote can be found in a section on milk siblingship my
2009 article, which includes references. The article is available on the
WABA website. The citation is:

Thorley V. Mothers' experiences of sharing breastfeeding or breastmilk:
co-feeding in Australia 1978-2008. Breastfeeding Review 2009: 17(1): 9-18.

A recent issue of Breastfeeding Review also carried an article from Greece,
in which the authors mentioned milk siblingship.

Besides the religious and traditional context of milk siblingship, the term
is more loosely used among some of the Australian women I interviewed for
the above study and previous writing, to describe the emotional bond between
the women's own children and the other children they breastfed.
