I need help advising a patient that I saw this afternoon. She was in labor
with her third pregnancy and had asked to talk with me about her desire to
breastfeed. She gave a history of unsuccessful attempts to nurse her
previous babies even though they both seemed to get off to a good start. She
reported apparently normal colostrum and babies with good latches but said
that her milk never came in. She was told that she had to give up with the
first when she was two weeks old and down a full pound. She used an SNS I
think with the second but finally gave up because once again her milk didn't
come in. Her mother has the same syndrome but was able to successfully
breastfeed and is being very supportive. Any suggestions on ways to help her
succeed would be greatly appreciated. I will start working with her soon
after delivery and will encourage frequent unlimited nursing. Her first and
third pregnancy were both Clomid pregnancies. Mary R.N, I.B.C.L.C.
