Melinda, do you have "belly balls"? I show moms the marbles which
represent the infant's stomach capacity at birth, 3 days and 10 days and
suddenly the small amount of colostrum makes sense. I also hold the
artificial milk bottles upside down, which causes them to drip freely,
and squeeze the nipple gently, which sends a huge stream of liquid
shooting out and shows what the baby has to deal with. Suddenly they
understand why the baby drank so much...again that survival instinct:
As Cathy Genna says: " drink or drown" !!
Another thing that Cathy taught us, which I added to my morning
lecture, is the idea that the baby calibrates the milk supply on day
two which also explains the feeding frenzy. And of course the idea that
breastfeeding is aerobic exercise and that it makes the heart and lungs
healthy. Moms can definitely relate to that!! IN her whirlwind tour
here, Cathy taught us so much, especially new ways to phrase things.
Thanks, Cathy, you are remembered every morning in my 7:15 lecture.
It is better to get to the moms before the birth to protect the babies
from those night bottles.
