The flu vaccine is targeted to the highest risk groups, those likely to have complications that might end in fatality if they do get flu.
Pregnant women are more likely to develop complications as are children under two.  Children under six months can't get the flu vaccine.
So the recommendation is that all pregnant women get vaccine, all children 6 to 23 months and household and out of home daycare contacts of children under six months.
Thimerisol (sp) does contain mercury and is used as a preservative in flu vaccine for adults.  I do agree that mercury is an issue for us in the environment and needs to removed from our vaccine, our water and our food.
