If they are like my hospital, they already push pacifiers. Every baby gets
one. And every baby that spends some time in the nursery gets one pushed
into his mouth. Example: the lineup awaiting the Residents, MDs, & NNPs to
do their daily exams.

Are the nursery nurses (and the nurses in your health center) going to stop
placing babies on their sides?

If they are really concerned about pushing pacifiers, they should be
equally concerned with demonstrating placing babies on their backs without
any rolled blankets to keep them there. If you can't use commercial devices
to keep baby on his back, you can't dummy-up a substitute to keep him
there.

Or are they going to teach one thing and do another - as in "feed your baby
whenever baby gets hungry", but in the nursery, it's feed baby exactly
every 3 hours. Or "we can put baby on his side or tummy during sleep
because someone is always close by and watching, but you (mother) should
not because you may leave the room."

"What we do screams so loudly that what we say can't be heard." (don't
know the attribution)

> I work at a health center that does teaching for postpartum and early
childhood routinely. Already the AAP statement is out and all the nurses
are asking if we should be pushing pacifiers.
> Please let me know what to send on the emails. As expected, the worst
interpretation is being embraced.
> Out of a staff of 30, only a handful are even breastfeeding advocates,
even though that is part of their job.
