Since Biblical times there has been an eb and flow of popularity for
frenotomy, not just for breastfeeding reasons, but for speech, drooling, and
oro-facial development. The AAP asked me to do a lecture on it April 1999,
at the Spring AAP Meeting in Chicago. I did a review of the literature and
combined that with my, and many other MD and LC experiences. Frenotomy does
have a place for a selected number of infants - usually breastfed ones,
because the tongue actions are so different with breast and bottle-feeding. I
put together a little packet of info for some of my local Peds who had
questions, and would be happy to share it with your Peds. It contains my
outline, reference list and slides plus a copy of the Messner paper which
came out in 2000, after my presentation. Barbara Wilson-Clay's handout from
the UNM Conference a few years back is also excellent, if she agrees to let
you copy it.
