I think it is hard for most of us who have breastfed our children to imagine
that we'd hit the 4-month-old with a stick at one moment and nurture him or
her at the breast a moment later. So hard to think that people can do this.

And re: the comment by the Pearls that millions of people use their methods
and it's not surprising that some of them might commit crimes. I'd just add
that any parents in Canada who do these things ARE committing crimes.
Canadian law does not permit parents to use any "implements" to spank, hit
or discipline children, and spanking is restricted to one or two "taps" with
an open hand. No type of spanking (even with an open hand) can be used with
children under two. I don't think this goes far enough, personally, but I'm
glad to have at least these restrictions.
