Dear Jay:

In response to the information contained in the Righard study, you wrote:

"My word!!! How frightening!! Now let me ask you out there who teach
Childbirth classes: If you were "Allowed" to give this kind of information
to your classes, how many parents do you think would opt for NO meds???"

I'm lucky. I teach independent classes and I show the video which reports on
the study. Almost all my clients generally want NO MEDS unless absolutely
necessary. It is a self selected group who find the video a strong reminder
of why they wanted a natural birth in the first place. All of them
breastfeed. Being LLL helps in that they already know me and feel quite
comfortable calling when they have glitches or just need some reassurance.
The down side is, the local OB won't take my students as patients because I
won't teach that Pitocin and the EFM have no risks. (He probably wouldn't
like the video either.) So, my classes tend to be small. That's okay by me.
I'd rather be free to teach benefits and risks to a small group, than lead
lot's of people down the proverbial garden path.
