Hi, Cindy: Glad to have the students back on-line. We get our new crop of
nursing students this week. I always enjoy having students on the unit -
makes us old-timers stop and think about what we're doing. I do orient
each group of students as they start their clinical rotation. I've been
given their one hour post-conference time their 2nd day on the unit. We
talk and I give them a packet of handouts they can keep.
To contribute to the question you posed in your recent post re: nursing in
public. In addition to the regular prenatal brstfdg class, our hospital
also offers a PP brstfdg class that focuses on "later" brstfdg issues. The
moms are encouraged to attend the one-time class with their babies,
preferrably when babies are about a month old. It's been my experience
that for most moms nursing is going well by one month, and they are
beginning to think about how they're going to incorporate brstfdg into
their particular lifestyle. Some of the topics I cover are returning to
work, breast pumps (with a hands-on display of the more popular pumps),
bottles (again, a display of some of the popular brands), introducing solid
foods, weaning, sexuality and birth control, and nursing in public. I
started this class in Jan. 2004 and word is beginning to get around that
this is a useful class. With at least a 95% brstfdg initiation rate among
our population, I don't have to promote, but I do need to promote duration
of brstfdg to these moms. Because at least some of the babies need to
nurse during the class, we usually have an unplanned demonstration of
nursing in "public", giving everyone the opportunity to see and discuss. I
also will teach milk hand expression if there is interest and a mom is
willing to be demonstrated on. They are very impressed with this one!
Nursing in public also comes up frequently in our weekly moms group.
Several moms have commented that they like coming to group because they
know they can comfortably nurse without fear of "hanging out" or having to
be concerned about other's reaction. Again, they have the opportunity to
see and critique each other's "form" in a comforable, non-judgemental
setting.
